self portrait as a chair

My work is representational of myself and my relationship to the world.  It is concerned with my gathering of functional every day domestic objects such as; chairs, cushions and pictures, and converting them into dysfunctional and perplexing things. My purpose is to remove the comfort, the control and the sense of order that these objects usually provide as shields against the unpredictability and lurking chaos of the outside world.

The physical presence of each piece thus becomes ambiguous, and poses the question; what is its purpose?

The images on the cushions are drawn self-portraits transferred by laser cut to wood, and printed onto fabrics and clay.

The ‘Self-portrait as a Chair’ has been structured so that the proportions of the chairs form, replicate those of my physical body.

I have placed the pieces in such a way as to create a dialogue between them, to encourage relationships and narratives to occur amongst them.

My study of and interest in existentialism has given me a way to contemplate an abstract dialogue between myself, my work, the making processes, and the materials I am using.
